Vintage Indian Brass Vase 11x5 Hand Incised and Color Enamel Painted Mid Century Boho Decor
This is a large 11" tall mid-20th-century Indian brass vase from the Benares (Varanasi) region, measuring about 11 inches high by 5 inches wide. It is shaped with a broad bulbous body, short pedestal foot, and tall trumpet neck. The surface is deeply incised and champlevé-enameled with stylized floral and foliate motifs in red, green, and golden brass tones. This decorative export work became popular during the 1950s–1970s, reflecting the global demand for bright, exotic interiors.
Finely hand-worked brass with multi-color enamel inlay, this vase embodies the artistry of Varanasi metalsmiths. Each motif is hand-chased, and the translucent lacquer colors are individually set into incised cells, giving a rich jewel-like effect. The vase retains an attractive natural patina, with only minor age-appropriate wear that enhances its character. Its tall elegant silhouette and intricate detailing make it ideal for display in bohemian, Hollywood Regency, eclectic, or global-inspired interiors.
Benares (now Varanasi) has been a major center of metalwork since the Mughal period. In the mid-20th century, craftsmen adapted traditional champlevé and lac-infill techniques for Western export markets. The bold coloring and Art Deco-influenced geometry reflect that era’s cross-cultural decorative trends.
