Antique Louis XV French Gilt Ormolu Bronze Acanthus Leaf Wall Sconces Pair Three Light Candle Holders 16 Inch
A matched pair of high end late 19th to early 20th century French Louis XV style gilt ormolu bronze / brass wall sconces, each measuring 16.5 inches high by 12 inches wide and of substantial weight. See photos for description condition and measurements.
Material: Solid cast bronze with original gilt ormolu finish (fire- or mercury-gilded surface now mellowed to a rich gold-brown).
Design: Three-light candelabra form with deeply sculpted acanthus leaves, scrolling C- and S-shaped Rocaille volutes, and budding candle cups. The arms are individually cast and bolted to a heavy backplate, a construction method typical of high-grade Parisian and Belgian foundries of the Belle Époque.
Date: Circa 1880–1920, when leading European workshops produced exceptional Louis XV revivals for grand residences and hôtels particuliers. These are the real deal and rare to come across authentic examples like this.
These dramatic three-arm sconces exemplify 18th-century Louis XV Rococo taste interpreted at the height of the Belle Époque. The finely chased acanthus leaves and swirling Rocaille scrolls create a play of light and shadow, while the original gilt ormolu surfaces add a warm, luxurious sheen. Perfect for flanking a mantel, mirror, or entryway, they remain ready for candle use or discreet electrical conversion, delivering authentic period craftsmanship to the most sophisticated interiors.
The acanthus leaf, an ancient Mediterranean motif adopted by French artisans, is a defining element of Rococo design. In these sconces it flows seamlessly with sinuous C-scrolls, embodying the exuberant naturalism of Louis XV ornament. The technique of ormolu (gilt bronze)—applying a layer of finely powdered gold to hot bronze—was the preferred method for luxury lighting from the 18th century onward. By the late 19th century, such finely cast and gilded sconces adorned the grand salons and opera houses of Paris and Brussels.
