Royal Dux Bohemia porcelain Pierrot clown with accordion 11.75 inch Art Deco Czechoslovakia hand painted harlequin musician figurine
Object: Tall hand-painted porcelain figure of a Pierrot or harlequin clown playing an accordion.
Dimensions: Approximately 11.75 inches high (approx. 30 cm). See photos for measurements.
Maker: Royal Dux Bohemia, Duchcov, Czechoslovakia.
Period: Interwar Art Deco period, circa 1920–1935.

Marks:
Green printed circular stamp reading Made in Czechoslovakia — a standard Royal Dux export mark used between World War I and World War II.
Red-brown decorator’s “D” mark (typical of Royal Dux factory decorators) inside the base.
The absence of the applied pink triangle is not unusual; many pieces lost the applied medallion while retaining the printed and painted marks.

This exquisite Art Deco Royal Dux porcelain figurine depicts a stylish Pierrot clown gracefully posed mid-step while playing an ivory-colored accordion. The costume is a rich cobalt-blue with soft ivory collar and matching cap, highlighted by delicate gold flourishes and two pale blue buttons. The animated tilt of the head and the flowing, asymmetrical folds of the garment embody the sophisticated movement for which Royal Dux is renowned.

The piece displays crisp modeling and lustrous hand-applied glazes, exemplifying the masterful porcelain work of Bohemia’s celebrated interwar period.

Royal Dux was founded in 1853 in Duchcov (then Dux), Bohemia, and achieved worldwide acclaim for sculptural porcelain. In the 1920s–1930s, the factory embraced Art Deco theatrical themes, producing dancers, clowns, and commedia dell’arte figures that captured the glamour of European cabarets and cafés. This Pierrot clown is a textbook example of that trend, with lively geometry and elegant, hand-painted color.

The porcelain is structurally sound with vibrant glazes and intact gold detailing to body. Minor age-commensurate rubbing and gold detailing loss to base and base patina that add to its authenticity and age. Appears to be flecks of paint transfer on neck that would most likely come off with cleaning. I wanted to preserve this piece in the exact state it was found.
