Vintage Solid Brass Foo Dogs Pair 5 inch RC Imports Guardian Lions Mid Century Hollywood Regency Asian Decor

This is a pair of vintage solid brass Foo Dogs (Chinese Guardian Lions, Shishi) imported by RC Import Corporation, a U.S. distributor active in the 1960s–1980s. Each lion measures approximately 5″ tall x 5″ long, with heavy solid brass construction and original red felt bases. The underside retains the original RC Imports foil label, confirming mid-century origin.

The pair consists of:

Male lion with paw resting on a ball (symbol of worldly power and protection).

Female lion with paw down (symbol of nurture, guardianship, and protection of the home).

These were imported during the mid-century Chinoiserie and Hollywood Regency revival period, when Asian-inspired brassware was highly fashionable in U.S. interiors.

Foo Dogs, also known as Shishi or Guardian Lions, originated in China as protective symbols placed at temple and palace entrances. Traditionally, they are displayed in pairs, balancing masculine and feminine energies. In Feng Shui practice, they are placed at entrances to guard against negative energies.

The RC Imports brassware line was popular with U.S. decorators in the 1960s–80s, often found in upscale department stores. This pair reflects that era’s fascination with Asian symbolism blended into Western decorative arts.
