Pair Chinese Archaistic Bronze Style Qilin Guardian Beast Statues 仿古铜风格 Feng Shui Guardian Beasts

Identification & Description

This is a pair of Chinese archaistic bronze-style qilin (bìxié) guardian beast statues, modeled after Han–Zhou ritual animal forms. Each figure is distinct: one with a pronounced flume-like dragon crest rising from the back of the head, the other with a compact form and curled tail. Surfaces are decorated with taotie masks, leiwen (thunder spirals), and archaic scrollwork—motifs borrowed directly from ancient ritual bronzes.

The underside shows vent holes, typical of 20th-century casting or cold-cast bronze techniques, with felt pads for furniture protection. Their dark patina with rubbed highlights mimics excavated bronzes, making them visually striking for display.

In Chinese culture, qilin (麒麟) and bixie (辟邪) are auspicious guardian beasts believed to ward off evil and attract good fortune. Their imagery originates in Han dynasty tomb guardians and archaic ritual bronzes. These modern interpretations reflect that same symbolism, making them popular in feng shui, interior design, and as statement décor.
